Voyiazis – LUAG

In Lyon’s View South from 88 Gold Street, the value of the piece plays very well into the overall message that is exuded by the rundown apartment. The dark black interior space which is also used to frame the view of the city almost makes it feel as if the apartment is a cell and although the city is right outside, it feels very disconnected and almost unobtainable. Additionally, the views we get of the city have this very faint opacity, the tenebrism, giving a mystical feeling to the city which also characterizes the city as a whole to people who look to visit. One aspect of this image that I really like is how the composition contributes to the subject matter in an indirect way. For example, the setting of the piece being in a disheveled apartment while looking out into the grandeur of New York City has an interesting dynamic because it makes the viewer ponder whether behind the glitz and glamor of NYC architecture hides run down and almost abandoned looking apartments. It feels that there is always more than meets the eye because I personally would not expect any apartment in NYC to appear as broken as this one and once again, how much of NYC actually meets the expectations of amazing studio apartments.
