Although I usually tend to be drawn towards photos or projects the further I get into articles, in this case, I kept going back to the very first one I saw by Graciela Iturbide. This photo shows a woman very close to the lens with a unique pattern or shade going across her face. The background is somewhat out of focus due to the photo having a short depth of field, and does not clearly suggest where the subject is sitting. More than anything, I felt that this portrait was very interesting because of the look on the woman’s face. To me, it almost seems as if the woman was surprised that her picture was being taken. There is that sort of “what are you doing?” look on her face, which makes it intriguing for me. The shade across the woman’s face seems to be a gate/fence and adds to the inconclusiveness of her true feelings at the time, because it is hiding some of her features and blends well with her upper body. I wonder what the woman is thinking with this look on her face, and it keeps me coming back to hopefully interpret more each time. Graciela captured her subject in a very unique light here for all the reasons previously said, while also doing so in a location that shows great dynamic range. The highlights to shadows are extremely opposite and it has captured the way the woman’s face peaks through the shadows very beautifully.
