Will Sgro – Lighting & Composition

Edward Weston | Pepper No. 35 | 1930

Weston’s Photograph ‘Pepper No. 35’ is a perfect example of composition & lighting in a photograph. It utilizes the spiral composition in the photograph, where the viewer’s eyes start at a heavily weighted point in the photo & then spirals around that point until the whole frame is analyzed. This is a difficult composition to pull off, as the elements of a photograph do not usually line up that well. In addition, the lighting highlights this path that your eyes follow, making the viewer’s eyes want to follow the spiral even more. It is a serendipitous blend of perfect composition AND perfect lighting.
