Analyzing “Pepper No. 35”

“Pepper No. 35” Edward Weston, 1930

American, Edward Weston. “Edward Weston: Pepper No. 35.” The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1 Jan. 1970, www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/286226.

I really enjoy this piece. The form of the pepper matched with its positioning towards the camera, makes for a wonderful view of many different curves and crevices in the vegetable. The lighting, although strong, seems natural and looks as if it is coming from above the object. This is because it mainly hits the top portions of the pepper while also subtly moving down the sides. The highlight accurately catches the curvature of the object and adds movement to the composition. The object appears to be in sharp view, even though its form is rather round. The light hitting the stem of the pepper allows for a nice contrast of this rough texture versus its overall smooth shape.
