I have chosen this photoshop tutorial because I’ve been wanting to get better at color correcting photos as well as reducing noise and spots. This tutorial starts with spot removal for noisier portions while also using the “filter – noise – reduce noise” action. The video talks about how this can often reduce detail in the photo, so to help that, it advises users to add a layered mask. On this layer, you can paint over the subjects or parts of the photo that you want to gain detail back in with a black brush. For more advanced masking techniques, the tutorial shows using the control I filter and painting with a large brush and white paint over portions you want darker. When using black and white, they color can be switched to gradients of gray depending on how subtle or strong you want the shading to be. The backslash key is also a good indicator for this masking technique because it shows where you have painted already incase you lose track of it. Lastly, the tutorial goes into color correcting for photos since it recommends that all users just shoot natural colors and later go into photoshop to alter things. Layers can be added here and use complementary colors to whatever space you are looking to correct with masking. The opacity can be adjusted to any point that seems most realistic.
This is a great summary of layer masking for noise correction.
