“View South from 88 Gold Street” 1967, American, Gelatin Silver print By Danny Lyon
Out of the three photos given, this one caught my eye the most. Danny Lyon’s “View South from 88 gold Street” immediately felt quite mysterious to me and secretive. The huge contrast between the rugged and torn apart interior compared to the crisp, clean buildings outside are very interesting to look at. I think this made it stand out from the other two because of how much this contrast changed the piece’s overall mood. The composition is also great with a wide dynamic range. The dark interior with the outside light fading into the fog is extremely beautiful. Although it uses a long depth of field, it still tells the eye to stay on the room close up somehow and dive deeper into it. The photo also seems very stable, but he lighting that shines through the windows onto the floor provides a very nice asymmetrical aspect to throw it off.
