The piece I chose is titled “Women Art Better Than Men. Not Only Have They Survived, They Prevail” and was taken in 1978 by Garry Winogrand. The angle of this particular photograph is as if the subject passed the photographer on the street. The mood seems lighthearted and liberating as the women is animate, running on the street with a happy expression. The composition of the cityscape is used to its full capacity as we see a shop door swung right open and a man gesturing a woman behind her in a different store. The photo feels very fast-paced, but exciting at the same time as the viewers question why is the subject in a rush and what does she have to look forward to? But then we realize that the subject can be any one of us. She could be any one of us excited to get off of work or school to relax or maybe more extensively, a big event just happened and there is a sense of celebration. The feeling of openness along with the grandeur of a new beginning. Looking at the title of the photo, this most likely attributes related to independence especially attributing to the pride of simply being, existing, and thriving as a woman in a time where they were not very appreciated. The subject matter is centered on the woman, what she is doing or was doing and where she is heading, what is her future like? But most importantly, the impression that more than anything, she is a woman of the present as the doors swing open at the sound of her footsteps.
