Angelique, Portrait 1

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz – Self-portrait, c.1990. Auction passed via Galerie Bassenge (Dec 2010).

Annie Leibovitz’s self-portrait stands as a remarkable testament to her artistic vision and the evolution of her career as one of the most influential photographers of her time. In her self portrait, she offers a glimpse into her personal and professional identity. In this self-portrait, she presents a captivating and introspective image. She appears to be suspended in mid-air which immediately caught my attention. The illusion of weightlessness symbolizes the creative freedom and boundless imagination that have characterized her work throughout her career. Her choice of clothing is a simple white shirt and dark pants, evoking a sense of classic and timeless style. The bare background adds to the sense of vulnerability and authenticity, as if she is inviting the viewer into her inner world. Her gaze is direct and intense and she skillfully employs dramatic lighting with shadows casting across her face and body. To me, this almost adds a sense of mystery to the portrait?? This image is truly a testament to her artistic prowess and her ability to turn the camera inward and captivating attention.
