This photo was Jeff Wall implementing his “I start by not photographing” method. This method is Wall seeing an image that he would like to photograph, observing the scene, and then remembering it. Once he remembers the scene he goes back to the location at a different point in time and he then recreates the image with different but similar subjects. So Wall is recreating the scene he once saw. That is done in this photograph because one day while being outside of his house, Wall saw 3-4 young people covered in tattoos sitting under a tree. The trees shadow overlayed another pattern on top of the patterns of the tattoos. He when back later to recreate this scene with just 3 people.
