Will Sgro – Book Idea

For the photo book project, I would like to add on to a very prominent theme in my portfolio – New York City. More specifically, the residents and tourists of the area. As a street photographer, I portray the daily life in the city through my photographs, and I feel like romanticizing all the little tasks in a New Yorker’s day could make for a very interesting book. In addition to these photographs, I think I could really flesh out this concept with the general design of the book. To match the font of the subway station signage, I am planning on using exclusively Helvetica for the typography of the book. I also like the idea of a landscape format, as I can fit one landscape and, depending on the context and/or page size of the book, one or two portraits. In addition, my choice of design element would be to emphasize the line, as perhaps the classic subway map line art could tie into the theme well. I am planning on using only white borders unless there is a full image spread, in which I will utilize a thin black border. In addition to these design choices, I am planning on keeping most of these images black and white, with maybe the occasional pop of color depending on how it looks once the images are on the page. I would be able to capture these images by going into the city on the weekends, which I am already planning to do three times in the next month, with all dates prior to the deadline. I firmly believe this style would lead to the best possible product, and I also believe my curation skills are the strongest in this style of photography. All in all, I think I could make a very interesting book out of this idea, and it would be a very helpful exercise for making books and zines in the future.
