Nuestra SeƱora de las Iguanas
Graciela Iturbide

Gelatin-Silver Print
This portrait is of woman who has a pile of iguanas resting above her head, almost like a crown or a halo. The name of the photo, Our Lady of the Iguanas in English, is a play on the multiple depictions of the Virgin Mary, this one likening Mary to iguanas. So, it makes sense that the iguanas are supposed to depict some sort of halo. The woman has a stoic look on her face, as she stares over the camera. The decision to depict her from a lower angle adds a sense of power to the woman, like she is standing over the viewer, and definitely adds to her regality.
