Gordon Parks | Colored Entrance | 1956
This photograph by Gordon Parks highlights a social justice issue by highlighting the subjects & the scenery. This photo depicts a black mother & her child standing outside a door labeled ‘colored entrance only’. This photograph was taken right around the climax of the Civil Rights Movement, so it was quite relevant when it was first taken. I think the tired look on both of the subjects’ faces aid in making this photo effective, as well as the clear segregational message on the sign above them. Gordon Parks used both subject & scenery in order to bring light to a very real issue in the world, & his message stands the test of time.
