“Magnolia Blossom” 1925 By Imogen Cunningham

For this post I really enjoyed looking at Imogen Cunningham’s work in film. The photo that drew my attention the most was “Magnolia Blossom” because of its crisp and intimate detailing of the flower at such a large view. I think that the lack of scale in this photo is very intriguing to the eye because a viewer may never know how close or far the lens actually was here. At first glance, it looks as if Cunningham must have gotten up extremely close, using a smaller aperture for this shot, however knowing that magnolia blossoms can be up to 12 inches in size, I am interested to know the actual details of the behind the scenes here. I think this photo heavily relates to work in digital macrophotography of flora but in a more true form. The detail of the center bulb is some of the best I have looked at within film photography, in my opinion, and I feel that the matte, velvety texture of the flower really shines through in a way that digital photography would not produce.
