Jerry Uelsmann

Uelsmann, J. (2012). The Forgotten Promise. Retrieved from https://www.uelsmann.net/works.php.

Brief description of his process:

  • Overlaps several negatives to have different parts of photos joined together

Other commonly used techniques from him:

  • Uses photography rather than computers
  • “Technique supports image”
  • Takes 2 photos both the same (with half of the subject in light, with the other half of the image black) and reflects the image backward to create an exactly symmetrical object
  • Using black backgrounds to create seamless transitions between photos
  • “Stopping looking at the negative as the finish point, and use it as the starting point”

Maggie Taylor

Taylor, M. (2012). The Lesson. Retrieved from https://www.westongallery.com/original-works-by/maggie-taylor.

Brief description of her process:

  • Photoshop layering to add different elements to her work

Other commonly used techniques from her:

  • Uses computers and scanning to generate images/elements rather than taking her own photographs of the elements
  • Uses a more organic way of editing; never goes into creating with a set idea
  • Edits work with multiple outcomes and then narrow down to which is best
