Tips to avoid too much light with long shutter speeds:

  1. Using the base ISO of your camera gives you a lower. shutter speed which will help by not overexposing photos
  2. Lower shutter speeds (below 1/60 or 1/30 depending on the subjects speed) allow your camera to have a longer exposure for motion blur but experimentation with both of these settings and aperture is the best idea in terms of finding the right blur you want
  3. Use a neutral density filter if shooting in bright sunny conditions; it will decrease the amount of light going into your lens while not altering the extension of your shutter speed
  4. Can use a 3- step density filter for somewhat bright conditions while 10-step is for high levels of brightness
  5. Use a narrower aperture to make sure that there is a good enough depth of field
