Uelsmann and Taylor

Jerry Uelsmann was revolutionary in his technique of montage of which he takes multiple photos of different objects and develop them in a darkroom. During this process, he makes some images negatives and uses enlargers to make certain aspects of a photo larger than the original negative. Over the years, he has collected many different negatives, and there are motifs that reappear in multiple works. He will often create symmetrical objects, such as the tree seen below, by splicing an image and creating two negatives from it.

Maggie Taylor is on the more digital side of photo montage. Her technique includes taking images that she has collected, a lot are from the 19th century, or creating objects/images with text-to-image AI. She then layers these objects in Photoshop and blends them into the same animated style.
