Lori Nix, Sentinel, 2017
Lori Nix is a veteran of some sorts when it comes to dioramas and tabletop photography. This photograph comes from her most renowned collection titled “The Empire” which really puts the hammer on the nail of the coffin regarding her apocalyptic world. The strong point of Sentinel is the ease at which the viewer can assesses the situation once reading the newspapers littered across the abandoned sidewalk. There is also the street signs that says “one way” and “wrong way” and many others that represents the loss in direction that this world has know that it has rid itself from humans or maybe it is how the humans felt when they disappeared. The photo begs for a story and answers to a world that was created within it. Out of the entire collection, this was one of the pictures that was created and “taken” at a different time in the day. It seems to be either taken at dawn or dusk and what we choose to interpret the time adds to the story. Is this the “Dusk of Humanity” or is it a “Dawn of an Age Without Humans”?
It’s clear you researched her work well and that you understand her message and concerns about the world.
