Bike Accident, 2005, Julia Fullerton-Batten https://www.flickr.com/photos/foxtongue/2491004588/lightbox/
This work is strong because it shows such a powerful message and story within one photograph in a series. This specific picture shows a teenager that is bigger than the other subjects which are miniature in comparison. She is on the floor, evidently hurt by falling off of her bike that is next to her, and cars are continuing to pass by her, without anyone paying attention to her. In my interpretation of the photograph, this shows two very powerful messages. The teenager being bigger than those around her shows how much, at that age, girls, and teenagers in general, feel like an outcast compared to people around them, especially adults. This also shows that teenagers tend to feel invisible when problems arise, misunderstood by adults as they brush off their problems and continue going about their lives, not realizing how much the problem affects the teenager.
Well done! This is a good read of Fullerton-Batten’s series.
