In my eyes, and thus my lens, New York City displays raw emotion not only in in humans, but also in things like cars, food trucks, mail boxes, and more. Everyone, and therefore everything, is always so expressive, whether that be simply talking on the phone while waiting for the subway, giving someone the finger, or giving their back to the camera, that is, the world. In Cityfolk, these busy city scenes are surgically boiled down as they follow my journey. I make photos with the intention of a timeless look, remembering the work of painters such as Edward Hopper and photographers like Robert Frank. That’s where the beauty in New York City lies to me. The architecture and scenery of the city add more narrative to this journey, which documents not only NYC but photography itself. I choose to shoot film when I make street photography to capture process and appearance. I also enjoy the process of shooting analog, as it is much more involved and intentional than digital photography. From my perspective, there isn’t a much better look than New York City on film.
