I believe that this portrait is effective due to its unique composition. This photograph is of Irving Penn’s reflection in a broken mirror, which creates a very unique distortion effect. This brought my eye straight to his eye, & that is quite effective for a portrait of a photographer, where eye is everything. In addition, Penn is credited with taking a creative approach to photography as art in a time period where photography was strictly used to document. This translates to this portrait, where Penn breaks the norm of portraits & uses the broken mirror to warp his face.
